SPECIAL EVENTS
1) The Winter Warmth Toy Drive & Identity Gift Studio (Ages 9–12)
Description: A community-centered outreach program running from December 1st to December 15th to support children in need. Families donate brand-new toys or gently used, high-quality gifts to the library collection bin. On the event day, tweens gather to clean, check, and wrap the toys beautifully. Using festive cardstock, markers, and ribbon matrices, participants write personalized, handwritten holiday notes wishing the recipients a Merry Christmas. The workshop wraps up with an interactive media session where kids photograph their finished gift bundles to create a digital "Giving Tree" slideshow loop on the library's main screen.
Developmental Value: Cultivates profound empathy, civic responsibility, and community social-emotional awareness. Wrapping boxes, cutting tape, and tying intricate yarn ribbons refines advanced fine motor precision, bilateral coordination, and hand-eye focus, while writing personal letters strengthens grammar, spelling, and heartfelt vocabulary layout.
Resources & EDI: Promotes the library’s physical non-fiction collections on global holiday traditions and community service. Equity is deeply supported by accepting used items to remove financial barriers, and ensuring all raw wrapping materials are completely free. Pre-written sentence starters and adaptive thick markers are provided for youth with physical or learning differences.
Staffing Requirements: 1 Children’s Librarian (manages the gift distribution) and 2 Library Volunteers (1 teen, 1 adult to supervise scissor safety and manage wrap bins).
2. Frozen Frame Jigsaw Studios: Family Winter Artwork Puzzles (Family Event / All Ages)
Description: A highly creative family craft workshop that transforms original art into interactive games. Children and parents sit together to design large, vibrant winter landscapes using heavy cardstock, bright watercolors, and textured foam snowflakes.
The Stories-in-Motion Twist: Once dry, families place their artwork into a manual grid puzzle-cutter machine or use safety loop shears to slice their drawings into interlocking puzzle pieces. Families swap their newly engineered puzzles with neighboring tables, trying to solve each other's visual winter stories while enjoying complimentary cups of warm apple cider and allergen-safe holiday cookies.
Developmental Value: Fosters immense family-centered social-emotional relaxation, community bonding, and mathematical spatial reasoning. Designing, cutting, and solving the interlocking pieces refines visual scanning, geometric symmetry, shape recognition, and fine motor grip control.
Resources & EDI: Highlights the library's physical drawing manuals and board game collections. Inclusion is supported by providing entirely free access to professional-grade art supplies and offering multiple puzzle-cutting template patterns (large, chunky blocks for toddlers to intricate shapes for older youth). The cocoa bar strictly provides non-dairy and dye-free treat alternatives for full safety.
Staffing Requirements: 1 Children’s Assistant (manages the puzzle-cutter station) and 1 Library Volunteer (helps safely distribute cider and cookie treats).
